Railway work in Castlerock

Translink is contacting households in the Castlerock area to advise them that work is starting on the second phase of a major engineering project to complete re-signalling works and a passing loop on the Coleraine to Derry~Londonderry railway line.

From next week, June 22, until late August, initial works will start in the Castlerock area and will involve the use of on track machinery and generators.

Normal timetabled rail services will continue to operate during this project phase.

Translink Infrastructure Executive Clive Bradberry says that in the interests of safety, the work can only be completed when there are no trains operating:

“Night work is essential over the coming months to complete this early project phase and we will make every effort to keep any noise to a minimum and finish the work as quickly as possible.

“We would remind road users and anyone using user worked crossings to remain vigilant as level crossing barriers will be in use and there will be trains operating both day and night.

“This work will secure the long term future and sustainability of this important rail corridor and when completed it will mean a more resilient rail service to and from Derry~Londonderry including the potential for more frequent and faster journeys.

“We would ask the local community for their patience and support during this project and apologise for any inconvenience caused as we work hard with our contractors to further improve and enhance local rail services,” said Clive.

The Coleraine to Derry ~ Londonderry Signalling Upgrade Project (Phase 2) is scheduled to be substantially completed by the end of 2016.
