Sophie lets her Voice do the talking on BBC show

A SEVENTEEN year old student from Ardboe wowed the audience and judges in new BBC show ‘The Voice’ at the weekend.

Local student Sophie Griffin followed her dream of performing on stage, as she performed a rendition of ‘American Boy’ by Estelle to four super star judges.

Speaking to the Mid Ulster Mail, Sophie was excited about the opportunity but admitted that she was a bundle of nerves before she stepped onto the famous stage.

“It was the most nerve-wracking experience of my entire life. I have been waiting for this opportunity all of my life.”

Talented schoolgirl Sophie had to battle her way through a number of auditions before having the chance to perform in front of four music icons.

Sophie is a regular performer at St Pius X and has starred in several musicals and talent shows in the area.

However, Sophie was only able to fulfil her dreams of performing after her Mum spotted the advertisement for the show on the BBC website.

The Voice is unlike any other talent show in that the contestants perform to four judges who have their backs turned to them. Sophie said it was extremely strange performing to judges who could not see you.

“It was a crazy experience knowing that sitting just metres away from you are four of the biggest music stars in the business. I admired every single one of them. Jessie J is a huge role model and I have so much respect for her. Tom Jones is simply a legend and only a few years ago I was standing watching Danny perform at a concert. I love Will.i.am, he is unique and different and is an extremely talented musician.”

Sophie admitted that she had a fair idea who she would have liked to have turned around prior to her stunning performance.

“In the back of head I was really hoping Will.i.am would turn round. To my amazement he did just that.”

“I am an extremely creative person and I think we will work incredibly well together. I think he really understands my style of music and I can’t wait to start working with him.”

Next up for the talented Ardboe girl is a 1v1 battle against a team rival to cement their place in top five in each of the teams.

The live shows are broadcasted next Saturday and Sunday on BBC1.
