Stewartstown man to stand trial over attack on Orange Hall in Cookstown

A Stewartstown man has been ordered to stand trial accused of damaging an Orange Hall six years ago.

Allowed to remain standing in the body of Dungannon Magistrates Court, 25-year-old Marc Devlin confirmed that he was aware of the two charges against him and that he was not objecting to the Preliminary Enquiry committal proceedings.

Devlin, from the Gortnaclough Road in Stewartstown, is accused of breaking into Mulnagore Orange Hall in Cookstown “with intent to do unlawful damage to the building or anything therein” and with causing criminal damage to picture frames belonging to the Orange Hall on 18 July 2009.

Although facts of the case were opened in court on Wednesday a prosecuting lawyer submitted that “based on the legal papers before the court,” there is a Prima Facie case against Devlin, a submission which his defence solicitor took no issue with.

Devlin, wearing a dark suit, was given the opportunity to comment on the charges or call witnesses on his behalf but the Co. Tyrone man chose not to.

Releasing Devlin on his own bail of £200, District Judge John Meehan granted Legal Aid and ordered him to appear before Dungannon Crown Court for arraignment on 15 October.
