The Plantin praised after London performance

A LONDONDERRY school band was roundly praised following a performance at a major international academic conference in London recently.

The Plantin, a rock and pop band based at Foyle View School, performed at an international gathering of music academics at the launch of a 10 year music study by the International Music Education Research Centre (IMERC).

The conference, attended by over 300 university music professionals was exploring how the music can be used to support the development of children and young people.

The Plantin, who have been together for a year are made of members both with and without learning difficulties and have been acquiring a great reputation as a formidable and entertaining act, having performed at numerous venues and events both regionally and nationally.

Professor Evangelos Himonides, Co-ordinator of IMERC, commented: “What an absolutely fantastic group. We greatly appreciated the time and effort the Plantin took to grace this important event with their wonderful music.

“I was very proud and happy to witness the achievements of these young people.”

Professor Graham Welch, University of London, said: “The performance was wonderful and the music was a real treat for our conference delegates. The Plantin really made the day come alive and it was hugely appreciated by everyone.”

Denise White, Senior Teacher in Charge of Music, added: “The Plantin had a brilliant time, they performed so well and showcased the incredible talents and abilities of all our young people.

“This is the start of a creative partnership with the University of London and we plan to return in the future. The Plantin are going from strength to strength and we are looking forward to our next performance at Stormont.”

Head Girl and one of the Lead Singers in the Band, Sorcha Friel commented: “The performance was great and we also got to see the musical we Will Rock You. We all had a great time on our three day trip and look forward to going on the road again.”
