Major experts toattend techspo

ACADEMICS, venture capitalists and tech entrepreneurs with an interest in robots, cybersecurity and moulding the future with computers will descend on Londonderry next month for a major intelligent systems summit.

The 2013 Intelligent Systems summit and Science Festival will take place over June 11/12 in Ebrington during this year’s UK City of Culture 2013.

Delegates will be charged to attend but a free exhibtion will be open to the public and will showcase the practical application of intelligence systems.

A host of intelligent systems experts are being brought together by the University of Ulster and The Sunday Business Post to share their views on the industry’s future.

The organisers state: “We aim to inspire the public to get interested in Science, Technology and Engineering. It will be an engaging and fun festival of science, technology and engineering - promoting STEM subjects and the excitement of computing and engineering excellence, examining challenges and opportunities for the next decade through practical demonstations including robotics, consumer electronics, virtual worlds and brain science.”

During the conference Professor Martin McGinnity of University of Ulster, will deliver a talk on the interface between the brain and computers entitled: “NeuroSilicon Computing - Exploiting a Fusion of Biology and Silicon to move beyond Conventional ICT.”

Top Intel officer Martin G. Curley, will talk about “Co-creating the Society of the Future using Open Innovation 2.0.”

Open Innovation 2.0 is dubbed “a new paradigm which is about sustainable prosperity and value creation, and well-being.”

According to the European Commission it “involves deep networking and collaboration amongst all actors in society to co-create value, to enhance and accelerate progress.”

Dave Whipple, Director of General Dynamics IT, will talk about the firm’s provision of intelligent security systems for Governments. GDIT counts as clients the US armed forces and intelligence community and Washington’s Homeland Security citizenship, immigration and ID card programs.

Dr Bryan Keating, Chair of the Matrix Panel - set up to figure out how to commercially exploit R&D and technology in Northern Ireland - will close the summit by asking: “Is there an intelligent way of making money from Science?”
