No rationale to divide boxing on NI v Ireland grounds

SPORTS Minister Carál Ní Chuilín sees no rationale for “dividing boxing” along Northern Ireland versus Ireland lines through the creation of a new amateur boxing association here, despite Assembly support from unionist politicians.

The Minister said any decision on setting up a new association, however, was a matter for the sport itself.

Ms Ní Chuilín stated: “The establishment of an amateur boxing association restricted to the north of Ireland is entirely a matter for the sport to consider.

“I have, however, already made clear my view that I see no rationale for any proposal to divide boxing given its strong track record of inclusiveness.”

She said the current system also has a proven record of achieving success internationally.

“The current structures governing boxing across Ireland have delivered consistently good social and sporting outcomes at local, national and international level,” she said.
