World record lambeg drumming attempt to be held in Pomeroy

The Moree Community Association will take the lead as Lambeg drummers from across Ulster will descend on the Tyrone town with the aim of having the most drums together in one place as well as the most drums playing simultaneously.

The event on Friday, August 21 will start at 7pm and is expected to last two to three hours.

“There are between 1,000 and 1,500 Lambeg drummers in Northern Ireland,” said organiser Keith Buchanan.

“While not a goal of the event, we’ll be pleased if it get’s more people interested in drumming.

“While the culture of Lambeg drumming is not dying out, the hope is that an event such as this might inspire people to take it up as a sport.”

“Similarly, Pomeroy is a venue often overlooked in favour of Cookstown or Magherafelt. However, as a centre point of N. Ireland, and close location to the Moree Community Association, Pomeroy is an ideal spot for the expected crowds, as well as drawing attention to one of Ireland’s lesser ­visited venues.”

The instrument has a unique and long history on both sides of the community. It’s also one of the loudest acoustic instruments in the world, though Mr Buchanan reassures the locals that the noise won’t result in any property damage to residents!

Currently, there are no records for the most number of Lambeg drums together in one place, or playing simultaneously. Photos and video will be recorded and sent to an American company with the hope that they will verify the gathering as a world record.

Registration is £10 per drum and will be in aid of Moree Community Association and Marie Curie.

A percentage of the proceeds of the event will be donated towards Marie Curie, who will also be present to take any donations that may be offered by audience members and participants.
