Young Conquerors complete clean sweep

BALLYMENA Young Conquerors Flute Band travelled to Lisburn for the recent Flute Band Association Own CHoice COntest with the hope of retaining the Grade 2 title they had won at the same event last year.

Conductor Richard Douglas has put in a lot of hard work over the past weeks and this was evident when Adjudicator Dr Windsor Hylands announced the award of first prize to the band.

The Conquerors’ performances of Intermezzo (Mascagni) and Sicilian Vespers (Verdi) received the excellent mark of 95 points, two ahead of Churchill Flute Band, from Londonderry.

The contribution of Richard Douglas to this victory was clearly seen as the band received both the conductor’s and best interpretation awards.

The ‘clean sweep’ was completed when the Conquerors’ percussion section of Albert McNinch, Jim Ross, Gillian Mann and Richard Ross received the prize for best percussion.

Anyone with internet access can watch a video of the band’s performance on www.youtube.com. Type ‘ballymena young conquerors’ into the search box and the band’s video’s will appear, including Intermezzo.

After watching this you can access Sicilian Vespers by clicking on lesaro74 on the top right corner of the screen.
