Ciara delighted with victory over Cavan

EIGHT local ladies provided the backbone of the Armagh team which won the Ulster Intermediate title at the Athletic Grounds last Saturday.

Clann Éireann’s Mags McAlinden captained the Orchard County ladies to their 3-10 to 2-4 victory over Cavan in a game which another Clanns girl Shauna O’Hagan shot 1-4 and Ciara Lennon from the St Peter’s club bagged 1-2.

The St Peter’s forward is one of the Armagh side’s youngest players and she was delighted to have been playing with some of the players she has been looking up to for years.

Now that she is beginning to feel more settled in the team, does the Lurgan girl feel there is more to come from the side?

She said: “As a younger member of the panel drafted in from last year, I really feel part of the team now and feel right at home playing alongside players that I have looked up to over the years.

“This is a great opportunity for the lady footballers in Armagh to show the talent we have coming through the ranks and I am just delighted to be part of the panel and hope that our winning run continues this weekend against Waterford in the All Ireland qualifiers.

“I felt privileged to have earned my place on the starting panel for the final. It was a great day for the team because it has been a few years from the senior team had won a trophy and it was long overdue. The team is mixed with experienced players and younger players.

“Cavan were not always going to be an easy opposition and a nine point victory over the All-Ireland Intermediate finalists last year was great for us. After our win at the weekend I feel we can drive on and build more and more as a team.”
