Down to semi-finals in Trolan Fourball

THE popular Trolan Fourball competition in Portstewart's Strand Golf Society has been running from mid December last year, through the depths of our severe winter, and the starting 64 pairs are now whittled down to just four.

Conal Loughrey and Chris Lundy won a marathon match against Shaun and Gary McCafferty, the last father and son pairing in the tournament.

Chris and Conal went three up at seven but were overhauled by 17. A disappointing three putt by the McCaffertys on 18 took the match to extra holes.

A single putt from Chris halved the first, three more single putts from Conal resulted in a win for him and Chris at the fourth tie hole. They will now play Fergal Stewart and Ciaran Cooley in the semi-finals.

Fergal and Ciaran needed the full eighteen holes to get past the strong pairing of Walter Brogan and Cecil Lynas.

One down and one to play after a tight match, Walter and Cecil were unable to force extra time. Ciaran is playing a bit more regularly recently and this showed with a good finish.

Paddy O’Connell and Sean McGahon out-gunned Alistair Glenn and Johnny Payne, running out winners at the fifteenth. The Neil Diamond Experience on Saturday night didn’t help Alistair or Johnny on the Sunday.

Paddy and Sean line up with Declan Kelly with Geoff Walls who overcame the holders Martin O’Kane and Dan Henry with a four and two win.

Declan in particular was in hot form with an estimated four under gross for 16 holes. Martin and Dan did well to finish the first nine level but losses at 10, 11 and 14 left them too much to do.

The draw for the semi-finals is: Paddy O’Connell and Sean McGahon v Declan Kelly and Geoff Walls. Fergal Stewart and Ciaran Cooley v Conal Loughrey and Chris Lundy.

Matches must be completed on or before Sunday 11th April. A date for the presentation of the prizes will be announced after completion of the quarter finals.
