Early blitz hands Ballinderry the cup

THE Lisburn Zone Charity Cup final at Eglantine Parish Hall on Wednesday night was over as a contest at the interval when Ballinderry blitzed their way to a 21 shots lead against Killaney - and that included Killaney’s ten shot handicap advantage.

Thanks to a second half win for Roy Copes, probably Killaney’s most consistent rink this season, only another four shots were added to the winning total.

Ballinderry won the old J. C. Patterson Cup on 15 successive occasions, plus two more. They did not enter the new Charity Cup in the first year, when Derriaghy won, but this was their third success in the last three years.

Raymond Stubbs started with a three and added another three at the fifth to lead 10-0. He won the next four ends and a five at the ninth gave him a 18-0 advantage before Eddie Patterson finished with a single.

Keith Morrison started with four, two and Malcolm Foreman’s second single at the fifth made it 7-2. Ballinderry added a five and a three at the eighth put them 15-4 up. Killaney collected a single but Ballinderry finished with a four to win by 14 shots.

A four and two threes helped Gordon Stubbs to a 10-2 lead at the fourth and with two “no scores’’ it was the same at the sixth. A Gareth Christie double at the eight brought the score to 12-4 and Ballinderry finished with two singles.

After Roy Copes started with two singles Eddie Marsden responded with three, one, one. Killaney came back with a single and two threes to lead 9-5 at the eighth before finishing with two more singles.
