Blow for SML as Westend Athletic fold

THE Ballymena Saturday Morning League has been dealt a blow with the withdrawal of Westend Athletic.

The Wakehurst-based first division side have been members of the league for nine seasons but have folded due to difficulties in securing players for the new campaign.

A statement on the club’s Facebook page said the decision had been taken “after much consideration”.

“We’re struggling to get a squad together to compete this season so best to do it now so our players can find a new team in time for the season starting.

“While we have retained most of our starting 11 from last season and added a couple of good players we have been hit by a number of our squad players deciding to call it a day and unfortunately no one can run a team without a squad,” the statement added.

The statement also described the situation as “sad” and thanked everyone connected with the club over the past nine years.
