The Brandywell men, who were minus Rory Patterson and Shane McEleney as the duo were playing for the Reserves in Drumkeen, missed a super chance to take the lead but Patrick McEleney’s 11th minute penalty was outstandingly kept out by UCD goalkeeper Conor O’Donnell.

Aaron Callaghan’s side broke the deadlock on 34 minutes after Robert Benson’s sublime chip from the edge of the box flew over City net-minder Gerard Doherty.

Just before the break Derry levelled things when Michael Duffy headed home past O’Donnell, after Jon Paul McGovern’s inch perfect right wing centre picked out the unmarked winger.
