The best chances fell to The Dons, however they were unfortunately not taken. Celtic had more possession, but The Dons chased and battled for every ball.

Cookstown took the lead on 32 minutes when the striker found himself free out on the wing and cut inside to score with a drive which gave Richie Southern no chance.

The Dons never gave up playing some great football against the red hot favourites and should have been ahead at half time.

The second half was much the same with both teams giving everything.

With five minutes to go The Dons’ Eddie Ferguson scored with a great shot from 20 yards out to level the game.

No extra time was played and it was straight to penalties, where The Dons ‘Roy of the Rovers’ run came to an end with a 3-1 loss in the penalty shoot out.

Don McMahon, The Dons manager was full of praise and proud of his team’s efforts. He said: “On another night we would have won, but that’s football, if you don’t take your chances you don’t win.”
