United youngsters enjoy action at Craigavon Cup tournament

The younger Ballymena United sides competed at the prestigious Craigavon cup on Bank Holiday Monday where the Sky Blues had a variety of teams on display from under 7 through to under 12.

All teams performed well against some of the top youth set ups about, this competition was an invitational tournament for Irish League and League of Ireland Academies only.

Highlights included some exciting penalty shoot out wins for the under 7s and under 8s, a memorable victory for the under 10’s against hosts Glenavon on the main arena at Mourneview and similarly the under 11s who had a thrilling penalty victory over Shamrock Rovers in front of a packed grandstand at the Lurgan venue, a memorable occasion for all the boys involved.

Meanwhile, United’s under-14s were in action last night (Monday) against Dungannon Youth at the Showgrounds, where they knew a victory in their last game would see them stay in the top tier of youth football.

United gave themselves a fighting chance by winning 5-2 at Derry City COlts in their penultimate fixture last week.

After falling behind early on, Eamon McLaughlin levelled the score.

Derry regained the lead early in the second half but Ballymena played some tremendous pass and move football and were rewarded with four goals from Harry Robinson, Joss Galloway and Eamon McLaughlin.

The Academy prize nights are taking place on Tuesday 20th May for the mini soccer section and Wednesday 21st May for the older teams, both evenings in the Des Allen suite at the Showgrounds.

GOLF DAY

The joint senior club/Academy Golf Day has been postponed due to the weather and will now take place on Sunday 22nd June at Galgorm Castle. Contact Davy Douglas or Philip Galloway for details.
