Conditions were anything but ideal for golf with heavy showers prominent throughout the day and this was reflected in the reduced turn-out. A ‘ding’ on six by Beckington enabled Moore and Watt to draw level and they remained level through seven. In a close finish .G.Beckington with two pars came home to win by one point ahead of Moore (two pars) and Watt (bogey, birdie) and with a better last six Moore finished second.

Did two ‘dings’ make any difference to the result in Division 2? Through three Neil Fitzsimmons (8) was being hard pressed by James Logan (7) and Richard Lennox (8) for the lead one point behind. Another point behind came David Millar (6) and Norman Nicholl (8) (‘ding’ at three). They were followed by Sam Graham (8) another point down.

With three to play Fitzsimmons was still ahead by one point but there were two new challengers, Millar and Graham. Lennox was another point behind with Logan and Nicholl (‘ding’ at four) two and three points further adrift. Fitzsimmons (par, par, bogey) held on to his one point lead to win from Millar (bogey, par, par) in second. Two points further away came Nicholl (par, par, birdie), Graham (bogey, par, double bogey), Logan (three pars) and Lennox (bogey, par, bogey).

Again in Division 3 bogeys were to play an integral part at the finish. After the Niuc Ralph Clarke (10) had opened up a two point advantage over John Caulfield (11) who in turn was another two points ahead of Mervyn Lamont (11). who did not do himself any favours with a ‘ding at the Trout Hole. Caulfield with the help of two pars moved into a three point lead over Clarke who was one point ahead of Lamont. Caulfield ran into trouble over the closing two holes and he finished with two ‘dings’ . Clarke capitolised on this lapse finishing with two bogeys to win by one point with Lamont ( bogey, double bogey) a point behind Caulfield.

George Watt (4) won the Gross.
