Moon shines as he surges to victory at Galgorm Castle

The McCarroll McConnell sponsored Stableford played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club was won by high handicapper Gary Moon coming home four points clear of the field for overall victory with John Carleton (15) in the runner-up position.

Moon, playing off 27, returned a card that included ten pars.

At the halfway point Gary Moon (27) was two points ahead of Conor Nicholl (12) and Willard Simpson (15) with John Rainey (11), Gareth Beckington and Adrian Atkinson (12) another point behind. Three and four points further away came John Carleton (15) and David Bamford (12) respectively.

Through 13, Nicholl had closed to within one point of Moon. Carleton and Atkinson were three points down to Nicholl. Rainey, Beckington and Simpson (‘ding’ at 11) were five points behind the leader at this stage. Two points further down came Bamford after a ‘ding’ on 12.

With two holes to play Moon had moved two points ahead of Nicholl who was one, two and three points respectively ahead of Beckington, Rainey and Carleton, and Atkinson. Simpson and Bamford were holding on another two points behind.

Moon finished with two pars to win by four points from Carleton (birdie, par). Nicholl (two bogeys), G Beckington (two bogeys) and Rainey (two pars) finished together and with a better back nine three Rainey won Division 2 with Beckington (better back nine) in second place and Nicholl third.

Simpson (bogey, par) and Bamford (two pars) came with late runs and joined Atkinson (two bogeys) three points away.

In Division 1 at the turn joint leaders David Stirling jnr (5) and Colin Steele (4) were one point ahead of David Halliday (7) who was one and two points respectively ahead of Paul Houston (5) and David Bellingham (10).

Approaching 14, Stirling jnr joined Halliday and Steele at the front with Bellingham three points down and a further point behind came Houston.

Through 16, Halliday and Steele were a point ahead of Stirling jnr. Bellingham and Houston were another two and three points down respectively.

Halliday finished bogey, birdie to win by one point from Stirling jnr (bogey, birdie). Two further points behind came a retreating Steele (two bogeys) who was joined by Bellingham (bogey, birdie) and Houston (par, birdie) and with a better back nine Bellingham finished third.

After the front nine in Division 3 Andrew Moore (16) held a one, two three and four point advantage over Derrick McClelland (16), Nick Read (18), Martin Laverty (19) and David Henry (19) respectively. Four further points adrift came Noel McAlynn (19).

Through 13 saw a new leader in McClelland who was a point ahead of Moore and Read. Three further points behind came Laverty (‘ding’ at 13), Henry

(‘ding’ on 12) and an improving McAlynn.

Up the Grove and Moore had regained the lead by two points from McClelland who was another three points ahead of Read and McAlynn. Another two points down came Henry and Laverty.

McClelland lost his chance of winning when he bogeyed the last two holes. He was joined by Read (bogey, double bogey), Laverty (bogey, par) and Henry (par, bogey) and with a better back nine, Henry finished in third place. Moore came home bogey, double bogey to win by four points from McAlynn (two bogeys) in second place.

James Crawford (28) held a comfortable looking four point advantage over Tony Quinn (21) at the turn in Division 4. Gary Carleton was one

point behind Quinn and three, four and five points ahead of Steve Henry (28), Jim Millar (21) and Ivan Graham (22) respectively.

After the 12th Campbell (‘ding’ at 11) was two points ahead of Quinn (‘ding’ on 12) and three points ahead of Carleton, Henry and Millar. Graham was another two points away.

With two holes to play only two points separated the six players. Campbell (‘ding’ on thirteen and another at fourteen), Quinn and Carleton were vying for the lead a point ahead of Millar and Henry with Graham another point behind.

Quinn, Millar and I.Graham lost their chance of winning when they ‘dinged’ the last. They finished together a point behind S Henry (triple bogey, bogey) who finished third.

Carleton with a bogey, par finish took first place two points ahead of Campbell (double bogey, bogey) in second.

Michael Reid (-1) won the Gross and the Seniors was won by John Hunt (14).
