Ireland lose world cup opener

IRELAND lost their opening encounter in the Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand, going down to a five wicket defeat by South Africa.

North West duo Stuart Thompson and Craig Young were part of the Irish side that lost; in fact the Eglinton man was drafted into open the innings, but he made just six before being bowled by Rabian Engelbrecht.

While bowling young Thompson ended with two wickets for 29 runs off his seven overs, while the Bready paceman failed to take any wickets from his four overs.

Foyle & Londonderry student Graeme McCarter will be hoping to force his way into Matt Dwyer's side for Sunday's encounter with Australia, which takes place at the same venue.
