Katie fires home to seal victory

FORMER Dalriada pupil Katie Mullan was in goal scoring form on Sunday as she knocked in Ireland’s fifth goal in a superb 5-2 victory over former Olympic champions Spain in the final game of the Electric Ireland Tri Nations series in Dublin.

The talented forward scored after a 70 metre pass from Sargent in the 62m found Katie all alone in the circle and the young UCD forward showed composure to round the keeper and fire home to give Ireland their fifth goal and a well deserved win over the Spanish.

Described as being fearless with never say die attitude, Mullan featured throughout the series which ran from August 13 to 24, notching up a total of 5 goals as the Irish girls prepare for next March’s World League Two Olympic Qualifier.

Irish Captain and former Ballymoney Ladies player Megan Frazer was also in exceptional form playing an integral role in Ireland’s success as well as getting on the score sheet.

Coach Darren Smith commented: “France got better as the tournament progressed and Spain are a quality side showing consistency throughout.

“We enjoyed the two weeks and it was great to be able to play eight matches and build on our systems and structures developed over the year. I thought against Spain in our final game that we were excellent in the first 20 minutes and created a number of opportunities and I was happy the way we closed out the second half. We now look forward to more test matches towards the end of 2014.”
