No surprises on the leaderboardin week four

It was a case of well established prize winners who took all the honours in Week 4 of the Winter League at Lurgan, although for some it was their first experience of reward in a while.

Michael McMahon won the 9 hole event a few weeks ago and some of his friends unkindly suggested that he would never stay over a longer course. He had the last laugh on Saturday however when his 35points, off 9, easily took the top spot.

Birdies at 8 and 9 set him off on his victorious stroll and he will no doubt be eager to confirm his staying power when the course eventually extends to its maximum length.

Olcan Kearney, 3, produced another of his magical displays to go round in 2 under par helped by birdies at 9, 15 and 18. This resulted in 33 points and 2nd place overall. Poor Paul Mulgrew, did have a sad tale to tell after his 35 points, off 10, were handicapped into obscurity.

No prizes for predicting the winner of the gross as Peter Cummins went round in 1 under par for 29 gross puts and victory.

The low section was a tight contest with Malachi McConville’s level par round, off 4, giving him 32 points and victory on the back 7 holes. Paul Lyness went round in 1 over, off 5, and claimed the runners-up spot.

Gerard Henderson opened and closed his return journey with birdies to score 33 points, off 9, and take the middle section over that closing stretch.

He and playing companion Denis McInerney have repeatedly come close to a return to the low section to join close rival Francis Tallon, but it would appear that is something of an impossible dream.

Paul Best also had 33 points, off 9, and came second in the section to add yet another notch to his legendary golfing family’s successes.

The high section went to Sean McEvoy with 31 points off 14, his success leaving Martin Rea as the only member of his fourball not yet to have featured in this year’s Winter League prizes.

Hugh McCloskey, 13, scored 30 points to come second, just edging the luckless Graham McNeill out of the prizes.

Everyone at Lurgan Golf Club wishes new head green keeper Neil Gordon well in his new role at the club. Neil started in his new position on this month and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and just as importantly enthusiasm to his role at Lurgan. No doubt the club will benefit from his expertise on the course.
