Penalty flick agony for Coleraine Ladies as Galway progress in cup

Both teams battled hard in full time before having to go to penalty flicks for a decision, in this case it didn’t go in Coleraine’s favour.

Coleraine started well but it was Galway who got the first goal scoring through a high forward. Coleraine fought back and quickly equalised by a fantastic goal by Niamh Tweedie.

It was Coleraine who started the scoring in the second half, quickly taking the lead. Sharon Kennedy, Kelly Watt and Niamh Lockhart linked well moving the ball quickly down the right side before finding Niamh Tweetie who got her second goal of the match.

Galway responded and after some time was awarded a penalty flick for a Coleraine player accidentally stopping the ball on the line, this shot was saved by Rebecca Crowe. However within minutes Galway where awarded another flick this time scoring equalising the scoreline.

As the final whistle was about to be blown Coleraine won a short corner, with all Coleraine players around the circle it had to be a certain goal, however an unlucky bounce put the ball over the stopper’s stick taking it out of play therefore ending the game.

With no extra time, the game was to be decided in penalty flicks. Coleraine started first scoring via Alice McGill, this was followed by goals from Kelly Watt and Susan Chapman, Galway each time matching Coleraine. A break came for Galway when their keeper saved a Coleraine flick from Grace Bradley who was unlucky to have it saved. The fifth and final flick for Coleraine came from Helen Tweedie who scored, Michelle Budina was unlucky not to get her stick to the last flick meaning Galway won 5-4 on flicks.

Coleraine would like to thank the umpires, coaches and huge number of supporters who came along. We would also like to wish Galway all the best in the final. Coleraine having won the league now focus on reaching the plate final.
