Promotion push still on says manager

The former Down minor and under-21 player, who has had great assistance this year from Collie Keegan, Barry McQuade and Gary Creaney says his side can finish the current season on a high.

“Of course the management team and all the players are gutted at the minute considering all the work put into reaching the Championship final but we are still in contention for promotion and have three league games left to play, so it’s now a case of regrouping and pushing on from here,” stressed the Whites boss.

At the end of the 2013 league season, championship structures will be defined by league status providing, that is, the current and much criticised system remains in place.

In 2014, first division teams will play in the Senior Championship with division two teams contesting the Intermediate series and teams from division three playing in the junior series.

So how did the Whites manager feel when facing a team from a higher division in last Saturday;s night’s Intermediate final having beaten another first division team, namely Wolfe Tones, in the semi?

“Well, if we are promoted, we will have to play these teams week in and week out,” he said. “It would have been in Killeavey’s favour to be playing division one football but the boys applied themselves well and the same committment will be needed between now and the end of the season.”

The Whites were relegated to the third division back in 2010. They won promotion last season and pressed on considering that the newly aligned second flight looked a lot harder than in previous years.

The North Street team, if results go their way, could capture divisional honours two seasons in a row which would be quite an acheivement for what is essentially a very young side.
