Rainey win trophy for a second year in a row

THE Rainey U13A hockey team travelled to Limavady on Thursday 4th October to compete in the Derry and Antrim Hockey Tournament.

The girl’s first match was against Dalriada, it was a tight beginning with some good runs down the right and left but then Sarah McGuckin hit a hard ball from the half way line across to Lauren Mulholland who was in the circle, she took it well- went round the goalie and put it in the back of the net. The defence kept strong and didn’t let Dalriada pass them, the match ended with a 1-0 win.

Next the girls faced Ballymena Academy; this was probably going to be their toughest match of the day so Mrs Burns had them mentally well prepared. The girls went out fighting and after some excellent play from the attacking players Lauren Mulholland took a long corner and hit a good flat ball across to Cara Brown who neatly put it into the back of the net. The girls kept fighting with great defensive play and managed a 1-0 win. This secured the girls place in the semi-final.

Next the girls had to play Foyle & L’Derry College for a place in the final. The Rainey team went out strong wanting a goal. Charlotte McKinlay hit a great ball across into the circle and Cara Brown swept it in to the goal from the left post. There were some great runs up the left and right from Lauren Mulholland and Ellen Campbell but the girls couldn’t quite get a goal. But Foyle pressed hard and tried for a goal but the defence kept strong and Catherine Elliot made a great save and by the end of the match the girls had a place in the final against Ballymena Academy, after a 1-0 win.

The final was here and the Rainey U13 Hockey team were excited but knew they needed to work really hard to win against Ballymena Academy. The girls tried really hard and succeeded in winning a short corner and Alex Burns scored with a great hard strike. The team was eager to win and kept playing well, with Zoe Crooks in sweeper making good tackles and Abbie Speers clearing the ball out to Andrea Hegarty so by the final whistle it was 1-0 to the Rainey Girls! The Rainey U13 Hockey Team won the trophy for the second year in a row and were very happy!
