SWIMMING: Ferguson claims gold at Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa

The Larne Swimming Club member took victory for Northern Ireland in the 100m backstroke in a time of 55.87.

The 15-year-old made a real splash at the recent World Junior Swimming Championships setting four Irish junior records in Singapore with superb displays in the 200m, 100m (twice) and 50 metres backstroke races.

The Belfast Royal Academy pupil followed up his CYG 100m backstroke gold with a silver medal in the 50m backstroke, clocking 26.19.

It was his third of the Games after he won bronze as part of the Mixed 4 x 50m medley team alongside James Brown, Emma Reid and Danielle Hill.

Hill, another product of Larne Swimming Club, took eighth place in the 100m backstroke final

The Carnmoney teen also posted an Irish junior record to reach the 50m backstroke final in which she placed fifth in a time of 29.93.

Ballyclare High School pupil Lydia Mills finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 5.65m
