Somme commemorations in Ballymena and District

The Ballymena Branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a short service in the Memorial Park to remember the fallen of the Somme on Friday, July 1.

There will be no parade by the Legion in Ballymena this year due to the main Borough parade being staged in Carrickfergus.

Members of the legion and the local public are asked to gather from 6.30pm for a 6.50pm start for the Act of Remembrance.

Wreaths can be collected at the Memorial Park at 6.30pm by the various associations.

Legion members will also take part in the comnunity vigil event at 7am in the Memorial Park on July 1.

Later that morning starting at 10 am the ‘1st of July Commemoration Committee’ will be showing live coverage from France of the memorial services at Thiepval and the Ulster Tower in the Dry Arts Studio, Braid Centre.

Tea and coffee will be available and everybody is welcome to attend, admission is free.

In Broughshane, a vigil has been arranged for the Trench Site recently constructed near the Buttermilk Bridge at 7.30am on 1st July.

A Somme Commemoration church service will be held in St Patrick’s Church on July 1 at 7.15 AM.

At 7.30am a whistle will be blown and a minute’s silence observed.

The service will last approximately 30 minutes and everyone is welcome.
