Woodgreen crash - '˜It was like driving through pea soup'

A woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a two vehicle crash on Thursday morning at the junction with the Woodgreen Road.

Shortly before the collision I had been driving on the same road in conditions that were best described to my colleagues as ‘pea soup’.

A thick blanket of heavy fog had engulfed the entire stretch of the road and it was extremely difficult to see the cars in front, especially as many had opted against using their rear fog lights.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service got the call at around 9.41 and sent a rapid response paramedic and an Accident and Emergency crew.

I drive this road almost daily and I have to say that the conditions this morning were amongst the worst I have encountered in visibility terms.

The fog was thick and, coupled with the worry that the roads were icy, meant that cautious driving was absolutely essential.

The Woodgreen Road junction is a notoriously dangerous section of the A26 and it lived up to its reputation in the foggy conditions of this morning.

Police closed the road in both directions forcing drivers to find alternative country routes to Ballymena and towards Belfast.

Diversions were made all the more difficult by the fog that seemed to show no sign of dissipating.
